Wild snow leopards captured by a ground camera in Kazakhstan.
The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is a large species of cat that roams the mountain ranges of central and southern Asia. There are known to be approx 3500 snow leopards left in the wild and they are well adapted for the cold temperatures of a high-altitude habitat. Snow Leopards are classified within the Genus Panthera, subgenus – uncia. The panthera species are referred to as the roaring cats, which includes lions, leopards, tigers, and jaguars. Despite not roaring, snow leopards possess the anatomical features thought to enable roaring, which include an elongated larynx and hyoid apparatus. Their fur coats are covered with dark markings that are as unique as fingerprints, with the spots forming rosettes on their back. The snow leopard’s tail, being the length of it’s body, provides a warm fur wrap for insulation and it works as a counterweight to help the cat balance as it jumps over rough terrain. Snow leopards are solitary animals throughout most of the year, but they do form pairs during the mating season lasting from December through March.
